A provider balance billed me in 2019. Metlife is unable to enforce their contract with the provider without a grievance process conducted over mail.
In contrast, UHC was able to identify balance billing with a doctor’s office and make them issue me a refund check with just a 5 min call with UHC support(instead of me paying a bill the doctor had sent me).
I will be going through the grievance process to get my issue fixed. I’m also looking to file a complaint with the regulator to change the way Metlife handles balance billing (their current process enables bad actors… in my opinion).
PS: 1. I have filed a report with the FTC already. 2. CFPB unfortunately cannot take this up as a UDAAP violation. 3. I have changed employers since then. I still have the old ID printed out. 4. Plan was in Metlife PDP PLUS network.
Please let me know if you need any more information.
