Twilight Sedation Insurance Price $28,500 or Self Pay $200!

A few months ago I had two injections in my back. The procedure itself had been preauthorized by Cigna and I only had to pay my 20% copay at check-in. During prep for the procedure, they asked if I wanted the Twilight Sedation. I was already very anxious about the injections and am not good with pain, so I said yes. I asked if it was covered by insurance and they said they never really know until they file it.

I went ahead and signed the “I’ll pay for this if insurance doesn’t cover it” form because I was even more nervous at that point, figuring that it must be really uncomfortable if sedation is even an option. The procedure took about 15-20 minutes and I don’t remember it a bit so I’m happy I got the anesthesia.

Several weeks later, I logged onto my Cigna portal and saw that the anesthesiologist had billed Cigna $28,500! They allowed only $275 and since I hadn’t met my out-of-network deductible, they wouldn’t be paying anything.

I contacted the doctor’s office and inquired about the charge. She said that for self-pay the charge would only be $200! I asked why they charge the insurance company $28,500 and she replied, “Sometimes they pay it.”

I still haven’t received a bill for any of it, though.
