I received a referral from my family medicine doctor to see a psychiatrist. This was after an annual physical exam. I’m 21 and trying to learn as much as I can about the American health care system since I’ve had to manage it myself since I was 20. I understand that most specialists require a referral from your primary care doctor. However, my concern is the cost. My insurance is shit and covers barely anything and has a high deductible. Will having a referral increase what my insurance covers or have any impact on how much I need to pay? If not, I’d rather not see the psychiatrist despite needing mental health help… Will calling my insurance give me more accurate estimates of cost?
On the other hand, are there any recommendations for people in my situation, seeking treatment for mental illness while keeping costs low? If I need prescriptions, would PAs and NPs be good choices?
