I am faced with an uncommon situation. I am currently employed and both I and my wife are covered under my insurance. I am switching jobs. May 20th is my last day and my new job starts June 10th. My wife is going to give birth around May 24th. My wife and I are still covered under my current employer’s health insurance until end of May.
Question – If the baby is born on May 24th, what will happen in the 7 days between May 24 and May 31?
From the research I made, I learned that all the services the baby receives are billed to the mother’s insurance for up to 30 days. Her birthday is in March and mine is in November if that makes any difference. I will not be able to add the baby under our insurance until June 1st with COBRA. So the baby will not have “its own” coverage starting the day it is born.
I have no choice but to go on COBRA starting June to ensure that my wife and the baby are covered until I start my new job June 10th. But what happens in the 7 days between when the baby until end of May? What if there are complications and the baby requires expensive treatment right after it is born? Will it be covered?
Trying to make sense of this confusing situation.
