Understanding dual insurance coverage

I’m hoping someone can help me with some info here because calling my insurance had not yielded any useful information.

I currently maintain coverage thru my world for medical insurance. My ex who I have a son with also has medical insurance. We both have him covered. Her insurance is more generous than mine when it comes to out of pocket money. She is telling me we can’t use hers as primary because my birthday is before her birthday (Sept vs. Oct) and as a result we’re getting a ton of bills that wouldn’t exist if her insurance was billed first. My insurance company company says there is no requirement that they be billed first and that it has to do with the way she is or the doctors offices are billing.

Is there some kind of specific order insurance has to be billed in or is there a way we can tell them which to bill first?
