United Health billing question/lack of notification for prior coverage in network

My wife got some lab work done mid October of 2020, and we recently the bill about 2 months ago (~8 months later). The work was done at a doctors office in network, and should have been covered. When we received the bill we suspected it was an error, and calling the Dr office and United, they were under the impression it was the billing address of the Dr office making the system think it was out of network. United stated the Dr office would need to resubmit with the proper address. Today, we got the same bill, called United, and they cited the same issue. We called the Dr office back, and they informed us that United is no longer allowing them to do lab work, and it must done at their approved labs, and that this change took affect October 1, 2020, but neither our Dr office, nor were we notified of this, and the Dr office had been inundated with calls about this for the past two weeks ever since Untied started denying the coverage of lab work from October ‘20 and beyond. My question is since we were never notified about the lab work not being out of coverage from our Dr office (and our Dr office not knowing about it until the past few weeks) are there any ways to fight having to pay this bill to United since they seemed to retroactively deny our Dr’s lab work to be in network without notifying either of us?
