I switched to UnitedHealthcare from CareFirst during open enrollment last year. I have moderate controlled asthma and did my homework. While the drug I take for my asthma, Advair Diskus was in their tier 3 ($85 copay), they listed the generic of AirDuo Respiclick as tier 2 ($35 copay). All was well, until I asked my doctor to switch me over to the generic AirDuo, and the pharmacy called them back, saying it was not covered. So I call UnitedHealthcare and the rep calls OptumRx (their PBM subsidiary) and I find out that they have removed the generic of AirDuo Respiclick and it’s not reflected on their printed formulary. Moreover, not just the formulary effective 1/1/2021 but the one effective 5/1/2021 still lists the generic AirDuo on the formulary. I understand things happen, but now there are only tier 3 drugs that treat asthma that are combination steroid/long acting bronchodilator. Not only are they all tier 3, but there are no copay cards available for any of the drugs on the formulary.
Maintenance medication for asthma is vital to keeping folks asthma under control. I think it was a very scummy move by UnitedHealthcare to remove the cheapest drug from their formulary.
