I had medicaid (Virginia Premier specifically) back in 2019 while still in school and working part time hours. I got a job that put me over the income limit in 2020 and called and called and called to tell medicaid that that was the case and that I also had new insurance through my job, but continued being covered bc of the pandemic. I didn’t use the medicaid because I didn’t go to the doctor at any point after getting new insurance until last year in October. I assumed that at some point I would just stop having medicaid coverage.
Apparently not… bc i got tax forms from Va premier and more mail from medicaid that said i still have coverage. My question is can I retroactively use my VA premier/medicaid as secondary insurance for the doctor visits I had last year? The appointments were in October and November, and when I called to ask the doctor’s billing department they said that they wouldn’t bill the remaining balance on my account to VA premier/medicaid but that I could call VA premier/medicaid and ask them if they would cover it. Their reasoning was that they wouldn’t bill to medicaid because if they didn’t cover it that the office would become responsible (because you can’t balance bill a medicaid patient). I’m going to call VA premier today as well but just wanted some outside input on the situation. I am currently still covered under both my primary insurance from work and also VA premier, if it matters.
Any help is super appreciated!
