What makes you ineligible to continue the COBRA coverage ?

So, I’m currently into several months with COBRA and recently found a job. I’d like to stay on COBRA by declining the new employer’s medical plan since I receive some medications from my current medical provider(which is on my COBRA plan) which is completely outside of the network the new employer’s plan covers.

Then, during the meeting with the new employer’s HR, I asked them whether I can continue COBRA from the last job, and their answer was “Generally, you lose the COBRA eligibility when you have access to a new plan”. I think what they meant by “access to a new plan” was “if you are offered with a new plan” rather than “if you obtain a new plan”.

But googling this topic suggests I can continue the COBRA as long as I am not covered by other medical plan(18 month limit applies, though).

What is the truth ? Or does the rule depend on the employer which offers COBRA ?
