I just began working in a medical office and I was wondering which health insurance IDs I should be updating at the start of the year and which health insurance member IDs usually stay the same.
For example I think Medicare member IDs do not change yearly, but I’ve noticed a lot of Cigna member IDs changing at the start of the year.
I do ask each patient if their insurance has changed but sometimes they say no even if they are not 100% sure. We are a walk-in center and understaffed at the moment so we don’t always have time to check the insurance eligibility at the time of the appointment. (Since most of our patients are recurring and visit monthly, we’ve been able to somehow manage this way, by calling them back for valid insurance information when our billing company lets us know that a claim did not go through.)
If I know which insurances usually change their member IDs at the start of the year, then I’ll know which patient’s insurances to be ON TASK about and which insurances to not worry so much about– when the patient says their insurance ID number has not changed. And then there are also a few insurances that change in June (if anyone happens to know which those are could you let me know?)
Another question I have is, which method do you use to check if an insurance is inactive/expired? Currently we use Navinet, but I find it inconvenient because if I enter an expired insurance it won’t tell me “expired,’ it’ll just say not found, which is the same thing that happens if a valid insurance was simply entered incorrectly by me. This way I don’t know if the insurance didn’t come up because I entered it incorrectly, or because it is expired.
PS. I hope I selected the correct flair for this post!
