I call the hospital and they tell me there’s no point in them telling me what they charge because it’s determined by the contract they have with the health insurer. And each health insurer has a different contract with them. I call my health insurer and for some reason they can’t give me the contracted rates. I don’t understand this. I told both the hospital and the insurer that it seems like the costs are basically a surprise and they agreed with me.
I have a necessary procedure coming up so it’s not like I have a choice in getting it or not. If someone needed a car because they have no access to public transportation, the car dealership wouldn’t give them a car and then tell them how much it costs and offer no refunds.
My two questions are:
Why can’t I get a cost estimate? Why do different health insurers have different contracts? Especially for procedures that are pretty standard.
Edit: second question answered…profit margins. First question still remains though.
