Why we tell people NOT to lie about their insurance

I just came across a patient at my work who was claiming to be uninsured, so we were giving him an uninsured discount. Someone then found that he had a non-contracted insurance through the marketplaces with no out of network benefits through a search on an online portal.

His previous discounts have been removed. What’s even more ridiculous is we’re happy to let people pay out of pocket and receive a discount as long as they sign an insurance waiver. But without the waiver we legally can’t do it. Now he may not even be given the chance to as we really don’t appreciate people lying to us and potentially putting us in hot water with the insurance company.

Long story short, don’t lie to your health care providers about your insurance status.
