Wife has an Unpaid Internship, Health Insurance Options?

State: PA

Wife is pursing a masters and has to do a full time internship next spring semester, unpaid and will be quitting her current job. So she’ll need some sort of health insurance for 6 to 8 months, dependent on if she finds work next summer/fall.

She can join my plan for an additional $220 a paycheck, $450ish a month. I’ve read about short term health insurance but I’m not sure how viable that would really be, my concern would be something comes up and we end up spending more out of pocket than what we’d be saving with a short-term plan with limited coverage as compared to her having more coverage on my plan.

Are there many good short term plans that offer decent coverage while costing significantly less than $450 a month? Is expecting to spend $200-$300 a month on a short term plan and being covered pretty well a reasonable expectation or should I just bite the bullet and put her on my plan?
