I tore my ACL and meniscus 6 years ago. I never got the surgery, because I had inconsistent health insurance coverage, I was moving around a lot, and I was a full time student at the time. Now that I have time and consistent health insurance, I want to get surgery to repair my ACL and meniscus. However, I am worried that because it’s been 6 years, the insurance company could argue that this elective surgery, and therefore not cover the surgery, or the physical therapy needed for recovery. I couldn’t afford the surgery without insurance. I currently have a Blue Anthem HMO insurance through my job, and I couldn’t really figure out if my insurance could deny the surgery/recovery costs by reading the info my job gave me. Would the insurance company cover the costs of the surgery and other medical care? Would I need a doctor to argue that I need the surgery? Not sure if that would make a difference.
