I went to the ER for a punctured lung after an incident at work a few weeks ago. At the time of the emergency, I gave the hospital my personal health insurance, which is a high deductible plan.
It turns out this is a situation better suited for my employer’s workers comp insurance to handle and these things are still coming together. They’re asking for invoices but all of the billing has been funneled through my personal insurance. I’ve called the hospital and personal insurance but both are quite insistent that I can’t change insurance claims to a different company after the claim has started. I simply can’t afford the deductible, nor can I imagine what they’re telling me is true.
It would seem to be the normal workflow for coverages to transfer to the appropriate place after-the-fact. Accidents and emergencies happen all the time that need to be worked out. This was only a few months ago.
What do I ask for and who’s responsibility is this to transfer the claim to the new insurance? I’m assuming this is mine, but if I had some guidance, I could likely be more productive on the phone with someone. At least know what to ask for specifically, rather than explain the end goal and waste everyone’s time. I had someone even refer me to a third-party recovery company.
