Working for a tiny, relatively new non-profit, I’m about to turn 26 and need to broach the subject of insurance. I understand so little about the employer side, I’m not sure where to start.

For the last two years I’ve been working for a very small non-profit. I make $36K/year but am technically a contractor for them, rather than an employee. No one involved is actually a full-time employee, so this employer has never done health care before.

When I signed on, it was mentioned that this would be a starting salary, but hopefully in a “year or two” they’d be able to give me benefits as well. I like the work I do and its flexibility, and I would love to keep it, so I want to bring it up now and see if it’s an option before I start searching for a new job.

I think it would help me ask more clearly if I understood a bit better how that works from their side. They currently do not have a health insurance plan for any employees, so what would they need to do if they do agree? What should I ask for or think about before I have this conversation?
