Can my 2yo son have different insurance?

So my family and I have become ineligible for my company insurance next year so we need to purchase from the open market. Unfortunately this means that any insurance we want to get does not have my wife’s OBGYN and my son’s Pediatrician in the same policy so we are thinking of splitting the policies within the family so we don’t have to go looking for different doctors. I don’t’ care who my physician is so I don’t mind changing mine.

I noticed that on healthcare.gov we can split the family on groups, so on one group would be my wife and on the other my son. The question is, can I be on my wife’s group so my son will be on his own in a plan and my wife and I on the other? or do I HAVE to be in the group with my son since he is only 2 years old?

This just came to me, would it be possible to be on three different groups???

Thank you in advance to all for the responses.
