Moving to Another State, But Keeping Current Insurance?

Hi there! I hope I chose the correct flair; I think it was the most appropriate.

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I’ve never had to use my health insurance in another state before, so I don’t know how it works (or how it doesn’t).

Here’s the situation: I currently live in Houston and have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas as my insurance. My partner’s job is taking us to NYC. I spoke with my boss and since we’ve been working from home for over a year anyway thanks to this cute lil pandemmy, she said she’d like for me to continue to work remotely, even from New York. This means I’m keeping my current job and health insurance, even though I’m going to another state.

Does anyone know if I can use BCBS of Texas in New York? And if so, can I use it for all the same things I would in Texas, or is it prohibited to only certain services?

For example, one of the things I use my insurance for is behavioral health. My psychiatrist said she may be able to fill a Lexapro prescription in NYC, but she wouldn’t be able to fill an Adderall prescription because Adderall is a controlled substance. I know this also has to do with where she’s licensed as a psych, but she said that when she reached out to another patient’s NYC pharmacy to see if another psych in Texas who is licensed in New York could send the script, she was told that wouldn’t be possible due to that other patient’s insurance…?

For clarification:

I use my insurance for both behavioral health and general health (check-ups, well visits, annual physicals, sick visits). My psych is attached to my employer, making her heavily discounted already. Idk that I could afford another psych without this discount, so I would prefer to keep her if I could, even if I’m in New York, because… I typically attend my behavioral health appointments via telemedicine, so theoretically I could keep my psych while out of state(?) My general appointments (check-ups, well visits, annual physicals, sick visits) are done in-person, so I would just see a GP in NYC. But therein lies the other question: would my Texas insurance cover a doc in New York? It’s all very confusing to me [barf].

I am open to enrolling in a different insurance plan in New York. However, I would prefer avoiding that unless there are no other options because insurance can be $$$. Currently my monthly insurance premium is covered by my employer, so if I could keep it that would be ideal!

UPDATE: Per the auto comment, my age, ZIP code, and income are 28, $60K/yr, and unknown, respectively. My current ZIP is 77006, but we have not yet chosen an apartment in NYC. Our new ZIP could be anywhere in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens, but we won’t know until next month when we apartment hunt and sign a lease (we move in June, officially).

pls send help i do not kno how to insurance thx
