Pre-existing Conditions Question

Last year, I found out that I have a potentially “yet to be discovered” brain lesion/inflammation type disease. The doctors have no idea what it is and i’ve had multiple brain surgeries etc.

I am currently enrolled in a very good employer health insurance plan that my employer offers that has allowed me to pay less than $100 over the past year for probably over $160k worth of treatments/tests/surgeries.

I have a potential employment opportunity that would allow me to work as an independent contractor (and stop working for my current employer, hence not have their insurance plan) and make significantly more money than I do now, but I am very hesitant, given my health situation.

My Questions:

1) Pre-existing condition: From my research, it appears that I can not be denied coverage or charged more because of pre-existing conditions. Is this true? I fear that if I try to get insurance independent of my company as a self employed individual, that I won’t be able to get it (or will be covered for a lot less) because of my very serious and expensive pre-existing condition.

2) I have noticed while shopping on the CareFirst website that there is no plan offered in my area that comes close to my current employer sponsored plan. Are there better plans out there if you call them? Having CareFirst is important because I have traveled cross country multiple times for treatment and everyone seems to be “In Network” for them. I guess I expected something sort of like a pizza menu where I can add whatever I like and the price would change based on what I had included. Instead, there are Gold, Silver, Bronze plans…none of which are particularly great given my medical condition.

Thanks in advance for the help!
