5 Months of Unpaid Copays

I live in New York City and I have insurance through my hiring union. We’ve been severely impacted by the pandemic and our industry is all but shut down. In July our health insurance was changed to a recovery tier. Previously we had 3 tiers based on our income from the previous year, with tier 3 being the best (no coinsurance, no Copays, cheap prescriptions, etc.). I’m still being charged for the highest tier while receiving the benefits of this recovery tier which are absolutely terrible.

My wife and I both have weekly sessions with a specialist. We’ve been seeing the same person since before covid and the switch to the new tier and previously our copay was 0. Since July the copay is now $50. So that’s two sessions a week since July at $50 a pop.

I made our specialist aware that our insurance had changed and she said she’d look into it and I didn’t hear anything else about it. Now she says we owe her for the Copays since July, something in the neighborhood of $2000.

Was it my responsibility to make her charge me each session? Now I owe this big lump sum while being out of work. Is there any way I can dispute it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
