Hi!
I opened my healthcare account to enroll today for NY Open Enrollment healthcare (Open Enrollment is until Jan 31, 2021 here). I noticed I was automatically enrolled in Medicaid. This decision was based on my 2019 Tax Return where I had a very small income, roughly $6,000. This small income came from moving to NYC and substantial deductions as a freelancer for equipment in my field.
For 2020, worked picked up until COVID. I received the minimum NY UI ($182) which I believe is taxable unlike the $600 or $300 weekly amount. Work has picked up tremendously since November as a freelancer and I am worried being on Medicaid which has a $17,609 income limit. I do not want a large tax bill at the end of the year, although I do not anticipate making a huge amount of money. I previously utilized an Advanced Tax Credit on my Premium for healthcare that was cancelled on 12/31/2020.
I changed my projected 2021 income on the NY healthcare application which was around 2x Medicaid eligibility. However after applying I received the following message from NY Health:
“You are no longer eligible for Medicaid. However we will continue your Medicaid coverage. This is because certain individuals determined eligible for Medicaid remain eligible for benefits for twelve continuous months from the date that they were determined eligible.”
I called the NY Health hotline and the guy seemed kinda confused by my question, because I am struggling understanding how I qualified for Medicaid even though NY Health automatically receives my Tax Returns, if I am telling them I will make more than eligibility this year. The guy says he thinks I might not pay taxes but I wanted to see if anyone here had any advice.
Thanks!
