I’m having a hard time figuring out if i can go to the primary care physician i’ve always been to (using healthfirst) to do a routine checkup, as well as the dentist and eye doctor i’ve always been to using healthfirst. I originally only had Healthfirst as my health insurance, but because of college, I had to purchase an aetna student plan since healthfirst doesnt cover out of state. So now, I’ve been told that aetna is automatically my primary plan (since it is an individual plan, and healthfirst is a family medicare plan), and healthfirst is my secondary plan.
What happens if i go to the same eye doctor (for routine eye exam, and to get new glasses), where im registered with my healthfirst plan? My eye doctor would bill Healthfirst, but would it get declined since its not my primary health insurance? When i called healthfirst to check, they said that since my family plan COVERS eye exams and eye glasses, it wouldn’t get declined. However, they said that im supposed to use my primary health insurance first.
I guess my question is: can i go to the same doctors ive been going to if healthfirst (my secondary plan) covers it as it always has, if the provider claims wont get declined, so i can avoid finding new doctors? OR, am i supposed to find new PCP, dental, and eye doctors and register with my aetna insurance, so that whatever aetna doesnt pay it will (automatically?) go to healthfirst? I called aetna to set up coordination of benefits, so im not sure if i need to call healthfirst to do that as well.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!
