A few questions about Ambetter

Location: Missouri. Plan premium: $534.55. Deductible: $1,450. Coverage from September 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. I have not paid anything toward my deductible yet.

Hi everyone. I aged out of COBRA coverage on August 31 and now I have Ambetter as of September 1st. Unfortunately, I made the decision with limited time (I will not make that mistake again), and I have now discovered Ambetter is truly terrible. I have read many reviews that they do not pay for anything, even things they say they will. I have called allergists who are listed as in-network on Ambetter’s site. The allergists told me they are not actually in-network & they have tried billing Ambetter & Ambetter pays for nothing. I also spent 30 minutes talking to Ambetter on the phone to try to switch my PCP from the one they assigned me, and they could not find the PCP I want (who I called & confirmed she accepted Ambetter) until they finally let me tell them her NPI number and then they said oh yes she’s listed in their directory but not as one of their options for PCPs.

Question 1: Is it too late to switch to Cigna Connect for 2021? I do not want to pay over $500/month for Ambetter until December given that they apparently do not pay for anything.

Question 2: I have some lab tests coming up and I’m wondering if it would be better for me to just order them myself from Quest Diagnostics & pay for them out of pocket rather than bill Ambetter not knowing how much I will end up having to pay. I have not paid anything toward my deductible yet. What do you all think?

Question 3: Given that I will be able to select a new plan for 2022, I have been thinking of switching to Cigna Connect. They have slightly less terrible reviews than Ambetter, and the majority of my previous doctors (Washington University Physicians) are in-network with Cigna Connect. The reason I chose Ambetter was to continue working with my rheumatologist, but the experience with Ambetter has been so bad, I am willing to find a new rheum at this point. Does anyone know whether Cigna Connect is better than Ambetter, or have other advice on how to make this decision?

Thank you all.
