Employer canceled then reinstated plan

Greetings, I have cobra insurance through an employer in which they pay half of the premium during the summer when I am not working for them. I enrolled in June and have made my payments every two weeks until August 15. On August 20 I went to a dentist appointment and was told that my insurance had been canceled. I called my insurance company who confirmed this. I got ahold of of the company’s benefits department and was told that they had performed an audit at the end of June and found that I was not eligible for insurance. Since they never stopped the automatic payments, I was told I would be issued a refund. Three weeks went by and I never received the refund so I called the benefits department again. This time I was told that they had actually made a mistake by changing my job code to something different than it should have been and that I was indeed eligible for insurance. I spoke with them again this morning as my insurance company is still showing as not active, an issue which I was told would be fixed on the 3rd. The issues that I’m having is that the benefits department is telling me that I owe the premium for the past month. Since my insurance was not active and I was unable to use it, I don’t feel like I should be paying for it. I understand you must pay to carry insurance, however my policy was canceled without my knowledge and i was not able to use it when I tried so what would I be paying for? I’m not sure where to go from here, any advice would be appreciated.
