My father is aging and is currently on medicaid. He has multiple health issues (Hepatitis C, difficulties walking, occasional slurred speech, poor vision, losing his hearing somewhat, several mental health issues, prior head trauma, probable liver damage) but not all of these are adequately cared for under his current insurance. He is unable to work so cannot get insurance through an employer. I am just now beginning this journey and am not sure where to start looking or even what I’m looking for exactly. I want him to be taken care of and am willing to buy him better coverage, but I’m not sure what to do now.
I am also considering paying for health insurance for a friend who has moderate mental health issues and some addictive tendencies, but whose employer does not provide health insurance. I want him to be well and see him succeed and this is a thought I’ve had recently on something to do for him as well. Is there anything I should know about providing health insurance for a non-relative?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! (btw all three of us live in Virginia)
