Hi guys, 26yo male here. I live in Texas. Recently got health insurance through employment, and I’m between choosing an EPO and HDHP health insurance plan.
The good news is that they are covered by my employer and I don’t have to play anything for these. It’s both under Aetna.
EPO has a deductible of $4000, copay $40 for PCP, $80 for specialist and coins of 30% for everything else. EPO also has a nice catch of no charge for laboratory.
HDHP has a deductible of $5000, Ded then 20% coins for PCP and specialists, and coins of 20% for everything else. Also, the employer is contributing $60 every month if I take the HDHP.
Prescription drugs are about the same for both. Out of pocket limits are the same too, $6900.
This is my first time getting my own health insurance, so I’m planning to see a couple of doctors for checkups/blood works. So I am currently leaning EPO. However, I also have problems with my tonsils and hope to get surgery for it; which in this case, the HDHP might work out better if I do end up getting the surgery. But, the surgery is not certain so I’m trying not to weigh it too heavily.
Also, I have a question about FSA contribution. Since I’m signing up late, it’s only 4 months left in the plan year. I was planning to contribute the maximum for FSA, but it comes out to almost $700 a month and I don’t know if I could afford that. I know the $550 roll over, so I’m looking at about $1000 contribution right now (I have some dental and vision care I would like taken care of).
