Billing Dispute: Annual Physical booked through Zocdoc billed as New patient

Patient question – insurance

Provider: Premera BCBS

Location: Bay area, CA

I went to a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for my annual physical (in-network) booked through Zocdoc during late last year in hopes of utilizing my insurance benefit. I could not get an appointment with any PCP and I thought if it’s an annual physical why not try going with a NP.

Zocdoc appointment shows I have booked it as annual physical. It was my first visit with this NP.

I am new to the country, the medical system, the process etc. The NP asked me a bunch of questions and ordered the tests at LabCorp (I am being billed separately for the tests which I understand). I answered them without knowing the consequences. The appointment lasted for ~10 mins.

Two weeks later, I was served a bill for ~$450 billed as a new patient visit and not an annual physical. I called up the billing department thinking there was a mistake and they said they will do a code review and get back. Annual physical visits are covered under my insurance plan and they cost $0. They got back saying they are right in billing it as a new patient care as they looked at the medical records and that’s what they see fit.

I have reached out to Zocdoc but I don’t have any hopes that they will get me any resolution to this.

At this point, I would be fine if I have gotten any value/care from the visit, but all the NP did was order the vitamin tests (that I asked for). And it pains me to pay this much for something that I have gotten no value for. It’s a brand new area for me, I am proceeding with an appeal to my insurance.

What else can I do? πŸ™
