So a couple of years ago I worked enough as PT to get benefits from the retail company I worked for. Due to covid my hours dropped and my insurance was canceled and for the past year I’ve had covered california. I’ve been actively paying for covered california, and actually was on the phone with them last month. Last half of the year (2021) I became FT. I never signed up with the company even being full time cause I wasn’t sure when I’d leave (which I did late January for a new career).
So I got this email from Kaiser (who I’m covered through) that my retail company coverage has now been terminated. So I’m like that’s weird, cause I’ve been paying Cover CA this whole time. I check my paystub from December (which I wish I had before, that is my bad, I get direct deposit so yeah) and guess what, retail company signed me back up with insurance without me knowing lol. So I’ve been paying both. Wasn’t aware a company could auto elect you.
I got an email about enrolling, but because it said this “If you miss this enrollment window, you will not be able to enroll until the next annual open enrollment period” I took that as, if I don’t elect, no insurance. So I never did anything. Didn’t deny it, my managers never brought it up (they had told me to elect when I was PT but nothing now) and the email never said it’d enroll me without consent, especially since I never even chose a plan (looks like they enrolled me in the one a couple of years ago).
I’m guessing I was just at this point paying double insurance for a couple of months (covered ca was definitely still charging me and for December and January actually almost doubled my premium -_-). Which I’m more worried about my other coverage being messed with. I don’t want to have to go through the process of fixing it and my prescriptions getting messed with. Which I’m going to contact them after the holiday weekend (though my kaiser account still lists coverage so that’s a good sign)
Anyways – can company’s just enroll you without consent into a plan you didn’t choose?
Now I know I’m definitely at fault for not being thorough. I feel big time dumb, but I still find it so strange a company would do this especially saying that if you miss electing you’d have to wait.
Any advice or knowledge on california laws/health insurance would be nice and appreciated!
Thanks for reading this, and even if no advice, hope you have a good day!
