I need surgery ASAP but I have Medi-Cal. What are my options?

I’m in dire need of Achilles Tendon Repair surgery from an injury sustained earlier this month.

I’m a little confused about something – I applied for and was approved for Medi-Cal with LA Care Health Plan following my injury. I now have a Medi-Cal policy number but the LA Care plan does not take effect until April 1st.

Do I have to get a surgeon within this network? They have abysmal reviews and most people have had horrible experiences. Or, can I go to a hospital like UCLA or Cedars Sinai and select my surgeon of choice?

I’m a lifelong athlete who plays competitive sports year-round, so I don’t want to skimp out when it comes to surgery and rehab.

Some people I’ve talked to suggest that I just schedule the surgery immediately and tell them I’m paying privately; then bill it to Medi-Cal retroactively. Can I do that? I don’t want to be faced with a $30k bill if that doesn’t work out.

Also, will I be able to get physical therapy on Medi-Cal?

Any insight is appreciated!
