Accidentally lost our health insurance…

Dumb mistake, hoping for some fast advice: My family gets our insurance from my wife’s employer. Apparently they’ve been sending reminders to re-enroll for months (the annual enrollment thing, whatever it’s called) but they were going to my wife’s spam so we found out the hard way today that we’ve had no health insurance since Jan 1. Naturally I’m livid and we spent an hour on the phone screaming at these people and they basically say we’re shit out of luck.

So: firstly, is this even legal? are they obligated to figure this out? If not, I can get insurance from my employer, but it’ll be a pain in the ass to navigate a new system – would my employer typically honor this? like, its this a “life event” or whatever they call it?

Thanks!
