Additional health insurance in Europe for a surgery in the USA

Hello everyone,

So here is the situation – I have a medical condition that requires a surgery (or maybe this is a procedure, but anyway), but since this condition is pretty bad in my case, I plan to proceed with a doctor based in the USA who is one of the world’s leading specialists in this procedure. I am not comfortable to have it done by one of the doctors in my country based on their overall approach so far. I am located in the western Europe. It is still “early days” somewhat and I have the 1st appointment scheduled with the doc in the USA and from there we need to see the next steps, but I would hope that the surgery would happen in the next 6 months.

Now, in my country I obviously have our regular health insurance, but nothing additional on top of that. I could somehow arrange with my doctors here that they sign that my condition is difficult and that I would need a surgery abroad and then I would need to submit this for approval to my insurer here and see if they would approve the costs of the surgery in the USA. However, the chances are (very) slim I would say. Because I am kind of going on my own to quite an elite doctor abroad and I do not think they will want to pay for that. So if anyone knows for Europe, if I take out this additional insurance (not a regular social security scheme for the workforce), what are the odds that they would cover at least something? I know it depends on their policy etc, but I briefly checked with one of the health insurance agencies and the guy pretty much told me that these cases are excluded (having a surgery in x months for a condition we know about), but I was trying not to ask him directly. Can anyone share their experiences? Is this something that people do? What would you do in this situation? Thank you.
