My wife and I recently had a child and are working to figure out the best way forward with insurance. We have separate plans because it didn’t make sense financially to get on the same plan. We either need to get the baby added to her plan or my plan.
My wife’s plan is excellent. No deductibles and mostly everything is 100% covered. However, until she is tenured at her job, we would need to pay a lot to get our child on her plan. Her per pay health insurance cost would increase by 7x. When she is tenured in 2 years, the child is included.
My plan has a high deductible and after it’s met i’m responsible for 10% of the costs. To get her on my plan my per pay insurance cost would increase about 3x. I have not had any visits or procedures this year to count towards the deductible.
In my mind, I should get her on my plan and then switch her over after my wife is tenured, BUT I have no idea what kind of hospital bills are coming for her birth or who they are billed towards. For example, I’ve heard that my wife gets a bill and the baby gets a bill. My wife’s insurance would cover everything on her end and whatever insurance we get our child on would be responsible for the “baby bill.” If that is true and the baby portion of the bill is going to be crazy expensive, it may make sense to get her on my wife’s plan that has no deductible but is much more expensive for us per pay/monthly.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated! We are in the states.
