BCBSTX HMO BLUE ADVANTAGE & No Place For My Kid’s To Go In Emergency

Reddit world, help this mama out. I HAVE to be missing something here as I cannot wrap my brain around what the best option is for our family. Background: We have health insurance through my husband’s work and I stay home with our 3 kids + 1 on the way. We have BCBS TX HMO Blue Advantage, and somehow it has been a nightmare for me. Numerous times I have needed to take one of our children in for a semi-emergency situation calling for an urgent care or an emergency room visit and with them being so little I do prefer for them to see a pediatric specific unit in those situations. I live in the DFW Metroplex, so there are PLENTY of stand alone pediatric urgent cares and pediatric ER’s and the mother of all pediatric hospitals, Cooks Children’s in Downtown Fort Worth. NONE of which are covered in network on this insurance plan. There is one pediatric urgent care about 45 minutes away, and just recently another popped up about 20 minutes away that we tried to go to and they told us we needed to take our daughter to Cooks Downtown instead. I just looked up the .gov marketplace plans and they are the same as what we have, so nobody on those plans can have their child seen at a children’s hospital in an emergency situation without paying as a cash patient?

We always say we have health insurance so that in an emergency we don’t get hit with an incredibly ridiculous bill. But it feels like right now we would anyways since over half of our family would be treated as uninsured in case of an emergency? Are we going to have to bite the bullet and attempt to afford a PPO next year? The premium is almost 1800-2000 a month from what I remember. Yikes.

Am I missing something? How can a HMO NOT cover not even one children’s hospital in DFW?
