Buying direct versus broker in New York state

I own a small consulting biz with my wife and have no employees so we have had to purchase individual health insurance plans from various sources since starting the biz in 2003. Things have changed so much and of course the pricing is absurd.

For the last 3 years I have worked a second full time job which has provided heath insurance. I am leaving this job and need insurance effective March 1.

One of the major health plans in this area is MVP Healthcare. The NY marketplace is so confusing and I’ve yet to connect with a decent broker, despite several attempts. I contacted a local chamber of commerce and actually got 3 different answers to some basic questions so there’s not much confidence there.

It looks like I can buy a plan I am fine with directly from MVP (which we actually were doing before).

Are there good reasons to go through a broker versus direct? The pricing doesn’t seem much different.

Thanks for any insights!
