I went to our new doctor a month ago and even though it was my first visit I scheduled it as an annual exam. He said insurance might not cover it since I’m not an established patient. My insurance (Anthem) covers annual exams 100% and have switched doctors 2 times before this and haven’t had an issue (same insurance), but figured I would just come back for bloodwork if it didn’t work out. I got my EOB and the copay was $0 and it was coded as preventative care, so I just figured the doctor was mistaken.
A month later my husband, with the same insurance, saw the same doctor and had the same discussion. Unfortunately, he didn’t think to wait for the bloodwork, especially since nothing was really discussed other than family history and my visit was free. We just got the EOB and it’s coded as new patient visit so we owe the $25 copay. Super nervous about the bloodwork now because the office just sent us a bill for $668 and the claim is still pending.
Is this a thing? Are you really supposed to go to the doctor, become “established”, then come back the next day for an annual?
