Can’t do employer insurance anymore

Ok I need to know what to do here.

My wife works, I’m bipolar with a couple other diagnosis that don’t allow me to work, and I don’t work. She has me and our 3 kids on her insurance. We make less than 35000 a year. She pays about 250 a paycheck for insurance. We don’t get sick too often so we haven’t had to use it. I got sick about 3 weeks ago. I had an ear infection. I think from the time we pulled into the parking lot until the time we left was about 20 minutes. He walked in looked in my ear wrote a script and sent me on my way. I paid a $150 copay, or so I thought. Today, I got a bill from the hospital. It says we’ve paid 150 towards our 1200 bill and that our insurance wasn’t going to pay a dime. So I was responsible for the remaining thousand.

I called the insurance company to find out why they didn’t pay anything. They said it’s because each individual in the house must meet the 1000$ out of pocket deductible before they will pay anything. After that 1000 they will pay 80% of the bill. Listen we’ve had this insurance for 5 years. We’ve never had a claim not even one. But when we do need help they don’t help? Anyway, how are we supposed to pay 1000 per person in the year before they cover us? We walk around with our account negative 90 percent of the time.

I looked. We qualify for state insurance if we are not covered by insurance. So should we just drop our insurance and apply for state insurance? Is that even legal? I just know we can’t pay the bill they sent us let alone if someone else were to get sick or hurt. My wife and I are absolutely over our heads and have no idea what to do. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

PS the whole thing upsets me so much because back in 2000 when we had our first child, who stayed in the hospital for 7 weeks, only cost 2 copays one 75 for my wife and I’ve 75 for my son. That was it. It was the entire bill. How did we go from insurance will cover 250000 bill in full but not pay a dime towards a 1000 bill! Just really frustrating.
