I’m shopping for health insurance for my wife to save money from my employer-sponsored plan and came across catastrophic health insurance with BCBS in SC. $8,700 deductible/max out-of-pocket for a $194 monthly premium.
We are not planning on having kids soon, but that can happen by mistake, of course. In the event she did get pregnant, I’m concerned that the catastrophic insurance could leave us in a bad spot. For example, if we had a due date in Jan/Feb, we could end up paying that deductible twice ($17,400!).
Am I seeing this wrong? How much cost would there be leading up to the delivery that could end up in a different calendar year? Would it be worth paying an extra 50% or more to get a bronze plan to limit financial risk if she gets pregnant?
