Changing insurance plans after childbirth to reduce costs

I’m currently on a high-deductible / low-premium family plan through my employer. Set it up in November, admittedly lacking some crucial foresight. Now this year we are expecting a new child in Aug/Sept, and the delivery costs are starting to give me the sweats.

Granted, my plan is pretty good – its max out-of-pocket plus my HSA means that, at most, I’ll only have to drain my bank account by a few thousand. Still, I’d love to avoid that if I could.

My question is: can I use the special enrollment period immediately after the birth to switch to a low-deductible plan, and then use that plan to reduce my out-of-pocket costs once the hospital bills arrive?
