I’m on a high deductible medical plan. I have low medical needs so any health services I receive go toward the deductible. My Chiro wanted me to get an X-ray and referred me to a clinic, and mentioned they are pretty cheap – esp if you have no insurance.
He was right – the X-ray (single image) was 75 bucks if you’re uninsured. I went ahead and took the uninsured rate, presuming that if I was insured I’d pay higher – they would bill insurance a negotiated rate and that full bill go to me since my deductible isn’t met yet.
Curious if this a good practice for HDHP users – granted I wouldn’t do this for ongoing medical treatment but for a one off X-ray or even my Chiro visits (he bills the same amount for insured or uninsured but I get a 10% discount if they don’t bill insurance and I pay upfront) seems like a good way to lower costs.
Granted I don’t know what the X-ray provider would charge if they bill insurance but I’m guessing it’s more than 75 bucks for a single image
