Colorado – dual plan coverage for partner

Context: at the beginning of 2020, my partner quit her job in order to look for a new one. Since I had health insurance through UHC via my employee and she would be losing her current coverage from her old employer, I added her to my plan temporarily. She then found a new job in March, and gained insurance through her new employer.

Because of my procrastination, I never filed a “life event” to remove her from my plan, so my understanding is that she is covered via 2 plans at once.

When open employment rolled around in November, I removed her from my plan via my employers HR portal. I initially thought this change would take place within a couple of paychecks and she would lose coverage by the end of November, but I just found out today that those changes don’t take effect until 2021.

Current situation: On 12/19 my partner came down with appendicitis and had to have it removed after a trip to the ER. At the time we thought she was only covered via her employers plan and didn’t provide any insurance information related to the plan from my employer.

My understanding is that she is covered under both plans through the end of the year.

Questions: 1) how does being covered under 2 plans work? Will this save us a significant amount of money from her recent ER trip? 2) how do we notify my insurance company of her recent trip to the ER? 3) if her coverage under my plan expires at the end of the year, do we need to get this taken care of before then? Essentially will they cover an event that happened while she was under coverage if we notify them after the coverage expires? I am trying to contact my insurance company currently, just figured I’d try to get some advice while I wait through endless hold times
