I live in CA. I worked in a government position. I quit at the end of August. Since I pre-paid for my health insurance, I was covered until 9/30.
My new insurance kicked in on 10/01. I elected to have a HDHP because my new employer has a very generous HSA contribution.
Last week I found out my old job’s insurance was still active. They claimed they had not received any notification from my former employer, and that my coverage was still active. I contact former employer, they said they sent proof of my termination to CalPERS.
I called CalPERS last week to request they retroactively cancel my health insurance. It’s actually cancelled as of today. CalPERS has the wrong separation date (it’s actually a week later than when I left), my old employer says that even if they did change it, my health insurance would have been only good through the end of September. They’re changing it anyway so who knows.
The problem is that because I had a regular health insurance plan through for all of October and part of November, I’m not eligible for an HSA for either of those months. My employer and I have already contributed hundreds of dollars to my HSA that I can’t get back (or maybe I can get back my part? I’m not sure).
I did not use my health insurance at all in October. The pharmacy did run it once last week, which is how I found out about the issue. I did not pick up my meds and nothing actually went through.
What do I do?
