Copay accumulator and direct reimbursement from pharmaceutical patient assistance program

Has anyone ever been directly reimbursed by a pharmaceutical company patient assistance program? I will be starting a new insurance soon, and apparently the patient assistance payments will not count towards deductible or out of pocket max. I believe this is called a copay accumulator. My current insurance accepts these payments towards my ded. And OOP Max. I was told that If I pay out of pocket first, then the pharmaceutical company can reimburse me directly. That way my payment will count towards my deductible.

Has anyone had to do this? Does it work?
