Covered CA – What health insurance package is best when expecting a pregnancy

Greetings everyone. I recently lost my job but the good news is my wife and I are expecting a baby in April.

We’re avoiding Cobra offered by the former employer (too expensive) and we’ll be using California’s Covered CA exchange for our insurance in the new year.

My question is if there’s a general rule of thumb to follow when purchasing a healthcare plan for you and your spouse when expecting a baby?

I’ve read somewhere that we should select a plan that has the lowest cost when you sum up the annual premiums + out-of-pocket maximum because our medical expenses will likely exceed the out-of-pocket maximum this year due to the birth of our baby. If that is the case, it seems like Blue Cross’s “Bronze 60 HDHP PPO” is our best option.

Should I be concerned that this is a Bronze package? Does this package not insure all of the same items compared to a Platinum package or are they all the same?

I’m really interested in confirming if my assumptions are correct. Thank you in advance.
