Deductible question

I have a $5400 deductible and about three months ago I had rotator cuff surgery. I recently paid the hospital that I used about $5000 for part of the procedure so I thought I was getting close to meeting my deductible. So I called my health insurance company to see how much more I needed to pay to reach my deductible. I thought $400. They said I was only at $783 towards it. I told them about my payment and they told me to call my hospital and inquire. The hospital told me they do not let insurance company know of payments. I don’t understand this. Don’t these two organizations communicate? How will my insurance company know when I meet my deductible without receiving information from hospital. I took it upon myself to copy payment info from hospital and I sent it to health insurance company. This is proof of payment. Am I wrong about all this? I just don’t get it! I haven’t heard back from health insurance company yet.
