Dental insurance is “self insured” through employer-how does that work?

I am turning 26 at the end of this month and navigating the process of switching from my parents healthcare plan to my employers. It’s been a super stressful process since I have type one diabetes and have a million different medical expenses, doctors I need to see each year, etc.

To make matters worse, I just found out today that my work’s dental plan is “self insured” AKA my company is the dental provider. I have never heard of this and have no idea what this means- my family doesn’t know either, since while I was on my parents insurance, I was insured through Delta dental. I (incorrectly) assumed my job would have something similar to that.

Can anyone please explain this to me- what will happen in terms of payment when I need to go to the dentist? My employer is currently in-between HR people so I don’t really have anyone there to ask. I was only told that my company is the dental provider, and that they are self insured. I received a paper saying that if I want to be part of the dental plan I will be paying $22/month but I know that’s not going to be the only cost if I need to go to the dentist.
