DME / CPAP Supply Billing for GEHA – Aetna Signature Admin Network

The tl;dr version:

Does anyone here have GEHA and get CPAP supplies? If so, are you familiar with the middleman approach that GEHA uses for billing of CPAP and certain other durable medical equipment? Have you been able to find a decent company (other than Homelink) to use for DME billing?

The longer version:

I have GEHA Standard coverage, and I get CPAP supplies from an in-network, local provider. GEHA contracts with Aetna in my state, so the network for my plan is Aetna Signature. At some point in the last 5 years or so, GEHA introduced a middleman company into the process, called VGM Homelink. Instead of billing GEHA and me directly, my CPAP equipment provider is now required to bill Homelink, who bills GEHA, and then bills me for the remaining copay.

I’ve had a pretty lousy experience with Homelink, such as repeatedly failing to send me bills, send authorization to my equipment provider, answer calls, and return calls. They do virtually nothing online with patients, so you have to be available to take a call from one of their obscure or unknown numbers if you want somewhat predictable service. Good luck trying to call, email or make an online payment!

Unfortunately, GEHA will no longer allow CPAP equipment providers to bill them directly, or me directly for copays. They can only go through Homelink or a similar company. I have often considered checking into alternatives, but never followed through. Guess I’m a gluten for punishment! With that said, I recently got a notification that Homelink is going out of network in January, so now my hand is forced. I am hoping to find a better company to use for DME billing and, ideally, keep my local CPAP equipment provider. I know GEHA can tell me who I’m able to use, but I also want to know whether or not others have had a good experience or not.

I’m open to suggestions for other subreddits or anywhere else I should ask this.

Thank you for any advice!
