Do I lose my COBRA healthcare coverage automatically if I become self employed?

Trying to find information and what the law states about this and can’t find much on it digging through Google. My previous employer laid me off “due to Covid” so I immediately started COBRA so I could keep my doctors and the premiums are currently 450$ a month.

If I declare myself an independent contractor and self employed in January do I automatically lose COBRA coverage at that point? What does the law saw about it? Anyone know?

It’s open enrollment right now so maybe I can find a cheaper plan but anthem and united both say their plans either won’t cover pre existing conditions or have no out of network max like my current COBRA plan does.
