Do I need to apply for ARP health insurance savings, or are they automatic?

Hi,

I’m a little confused about how to get the healthcare savings from the American Rescue Plan.

I currently have healthcare through the ACA, but was just above the income limit for help, so I get no assistance (which sucks because it’s my biggest expense other than rent). I used the calculator at Covered California (my state’s health insurance site) and after entering my income, etc, it tells me that I can now, through Biden’s ARP, get a $71 per month subsidy for the same plan I’m on.

So I called to ask and they told me that, yes, I could apply for the same plan using the “compared & shop” tool and get those savings. However, nothing happens when I try to apply and I can’t do it when I’m logged in. So I called back and was confused when another person basically told me the opposite – that I don’t have to do anything and that my savings will be automatically applied at some point between now and June.

I’m worried that I’ll just wait around and leave savings on the table because I didn’t apply soon enough under the ARP. For new applicants, it can kick in as soon as May 1st, and I’m concerned that even if I get it automatically in June, it won’t be retroactive until May, as it is for new applicants. Does anyone know if I need to apply to a new plan with the ARP savings or if they’ll be applied automatically?

Thanks so much!
