Long story short, I went to an ENT a few weeks back for some sinus issues. I paid $60 for my copay for an office visit.
While I was in the office and the doctor was doing his examination he said, “I’m going to use this scope in your nose.” He stuck it in, looked around, and took it out. The whole thing took less than 2 minutes, if that.
When I received my bill it stated I was being charged $1775 for a nasal endoscopy outside of my copay. I’m sure everyone here thinks that is absurd as I do. After insurance I end up owing $415.
So far I’ve contacted their office to have it escalated (this was two weeks ago–I didn’t hear anything back and received the official bill this morning), used fairhealth.org to see average prices in my zip code (which I plan to bring up on my next call with the billing department as the normal “in network” rate for this came up as around $200 on my search), I’ve documented all my communication with them and plan to start recording (I will tell them I’m recording for my medical documentation when I do) our conversations for evidence.
My question is, what do I do now? It definitely seems like they plan to just ignore me and charge me whatever they want. Any advice moving forward?
I’m in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19130) and the doctor works for Penn if that is of any help/relevance.
