My doctor ordered a mammogram as part of pre op for surgery. This doctor is an hour away and out of state, but in-network. I tried to stay local for this surgery, but my local surgeon referred me out of state due to complexity. I asked the new doctor in person if I could have the mammogram done locally and she said no, that she wanted it done at that network of hospitals. I can’t remember the exact reason because this was in November, but I thought it may have had to do with the clarity of images or timeliness? Not sure, but anyways, my insurance only covered so much because they said I could have had it done in state. This mammogram also turned into an ultrasound and biopsy which I now have a $2.6k bill from. I contacted her office about it and asked if they could have the doctor write a letter to justify her choice of me having it done there. Her office person refused and said that I could have had it done in state and there is no medical reason to list. I don’t know what to think. The doctor clearly had a reason or else she wouldn’t have cared where I had it done. I’m not even sure my doctor is aware this is going on. I left a message asking the office manager to call me back, but is it just me or are they screwing me over? I really want to know because I’m not sure how sternly I should approach this.
